Rakvere family vacation

Image
Hey everyone! It's already april and spring is on its full swing! :) Not that the weather is great here in Finland where it rains, snows like crazy but sometimes it even shines through the clouds. Anyway, it is time to tell about our recent vacation to Rakvere , Estonia. (The link goes straight to Ikaalisten matkatoimisto's site where you can book your own trip to Rakvere). We started our trip with a ferry that was included in the price, and we also had our car with us. The ferry takes about 2 hours to get from Helsinki to Tallinn, and we travelled with the super fancy new boat called MS Megastar . Not only the process of driving your car to and from the ferry works as it should, the ferry is so clean, modern and it has two things families travelling with kids need: a playroom and Burger King ;) You know, first your kids get to run around in a safe playarea and just before you have to leave the boat and get in to your car, you eat something fast (because kids are still at ...

Winter is here and planning our next trip with Trip Finder

Good morning, everyone! I'm slowly starting this workweek so I decided what better way to start it than blogging? :) Most people here in Finland have this week off as they are on their winter holiday. And what a week they have: lots of snow, sun but also a really cold weather. Currently it's -13 degrees and that's cold for me! I'm so lucky I don't have to travel to work today or tomorrow and I can just work from home. I'm not a fan of cold weather ;) But for those vacationing this week - super week! This weekend was all about doing stuff outdoors: playing at a theme park and playing in the snow at my parents house. My little boys love it and when we finally have a week off from being sick, you really need to take a full advantage of it :) So playing outdoors it is for us! And as I started this blog talking about vacationing, it's something that's happening for us in just a few weeks as easter approaches. Vacation that is. We're not sure yet w...

Back from Crete and my thoughts on the holiday :)

Hey everyone! It's been a while because I was on a vacation with my family in Crete :) Wonderful holiday with perfect weather, the sun, the sand, the beaches..the food and the people. Go there if you like all those :) Everything went well even though I had my fears of travelling with two little ones. Will they get sick? Will they sleep or eat there? No worries, really. I packed all the baby food already here in Finland and I'm glad I did because not of the stores in Crete had baby food! Yeah, it wasn't quite the season yet so they didn't have any and my little one eats like a big boy. Diapers? Yes, they have those in every store but I still had everything ready so we didn't need to buy any. Clothes? I always have too many and you just don't really need that many clothes anyway cause you spend all your holiday at the beach. We we're lucky - we only had one rainy day. Only thing you really need to make sure when travelling with little ones are snacks on th...

Planning a short summer vacation with kids in Finland

It's time to think about a little trip with our family: a road trip somewhere in Finland. Yes, nothing too stressful and especially not too far :) Since I'm breastfeeding we need several stops along the way plus baby can't sit on a car seat for too long (because he can't sit yet) so we're literally making a 2 hr trip to a (at least) 6 hr trip ;) Yes, good times. We're thinking about travelling to Tampere which is only 2 hrs (I mean, 6 hrs for us) away from Espoo. Just 2 nights in a hotel and maybe going for the sites they have - such as Särkänniemi . That place should entertain our 2 year old just fine :) For accommodation (hotel) I already checked Booking   and ebookers . Radisson Blu  -hotel also usually has good summer deals and I'm especially looking for those for the family. I think it's gonna rain next week so we need a good hotel and lot's of stuff to do there in case we're stuck in there. So this is our very short summer vacation this...

Hyvää Vappua - Vappu celebration in Finland!

Yes, happy Vappu , everyone! This has definitely been one of my favorite holidays. Usually this has been the beginning of spring with people being happy (yes, sparkling wine does the trick ;)), sun showing (even today) and just the feeling that winter is finally over. As a university student it gives it a whole different meaning: you get to wear your white high school graduation hat and an overall from your university, and not forgetting Vappu picnic either which happens May 1, so tomorrow. Well, this year it's different with me being pregnant and just not wanting to go anywhere too far. My parents are coming over tonight and we're having a sort of vappu buffet with home-made sima   drink , munkki   (a finnish version of doughnut, just slightly different), potato salad, sausage..and many other things. My mom makes really good sima so I didn't have to make own, and she'll bring it here too. L will have his vappu balloon this year too and he can't wait to have it t...

Happy Palm Sunday!

Yes, happy palm sunday everyone! In Finland we have this easter  tradition that little girls (and boys too) dress up as witches or bunnies and go sort of trick of treating on the sunday before easter, on palm sunday which happens to be today. They bring decorated twigs to neighbors and in return they receive a reward (usually coins or chocolate easter eggs or other candies). We were pleased to have one set of these witches today and thank god I still had some easter eggs left :) Fun tradition, I remember doing that when I was a child and my husband did too. Good way to earn some money on your own and obviously didn't hurt getting some chocolate as well :) Maybe next year we'll go do that with L but only to greet both grandparents - he's way too young to go doing that on his own. So a lot of chocolate eaten this weekend and more to come next week when I start my easter holiday. I have some holiday left which needs to be used before the end of april so now's a good t...
